Getting to Junction 2026 for as little as possible

Europe's biggest hackathon, 13–15 November at Hype Areena in Espoo (Finland). OpenAI is on the tech-partner list. Free entry. Here is the cheapest way to get there from Eindhoven, and from Madrid for your friend.

Do this first. Entry is by application and accepted participants only. Applications close at midnight on 25 Oct (Finnish time). Make sure your invitation is turned into an accepted application, and that your Madrid friend applies too. The €300/€100 travel-grant deadline (6 Sept) has already passed. It is worth emailing hello@hackjunction.com to ask if any are left, but do not count on it.

The event

Best route from Eindhoven

There is no direct Eindhoven–Helsinki flight. The cheapest real options are below. Prices are what the comparison sites showed on 7 Oct. They are indicative, not live quotes: fares move daily, so re-check them with your exact dates.

RouteHowIndicative cost (return)Verdict
1. Charleroi (CRL) directBus Eindhoven → Charleroi Airport (FlixBus / Flibco, 8 a day, ~2.5–3 h) + Ryanair CRL ⇄ HEL, direct, ~2h45Flights: from €19 one-way (seen for Mon 16 Nov), expect ~€40–120 return for a Fri/Sun trip. Bus: ~€30 each way as listed.Cheapest. Roughly €110–240 for bus + flights.
2. Amsterdam (AMS)Train Eindhoven → Schiphol (~1h30) + KLM / Finnair / Norwegian / SAS direct, ~2h30Return seen ~€290 for 16–19 Nov. Train ~€20 each way. Most comfortable, about 2× the price. Pick if Charleroi days do not fit.
3. Brussels (BRU)Train Eindhoven → Brussels + Finnair / Brussels Airlines / SASFinnair seen from €268 return (21–24 Nov). Kiwi lists one-ways from ~$105.Only if a cheap fare shows up. Not better than 1 or 2.
4. Eindhoven (EIN) with stopsKiwi combines Ryanair/Wizz flights with 1–2 stops, from Eindhoven airport itself~$250 return seen for an October date.Self-made connections. A missed leg is not protected. Avoid.
5. Tallinn + ferryFly to Tallinn (no direct from EIN), ferry Tallinn → Helsinki, 2 hFlights from ~€149 + ferry €15–35 each way.Not cheaper, and slower.

Why Charleroi wins, and the catch

Ryanair is the only cheap direct to Helsinki in the Benelux. It leaves from Charleroi, not Brussels Airport. The catch is that it does not fly every day: sources show about 4 departures a week from Charleroi and 3 a week back, and one fare page lists only 13 flying days in November. Winter 2026 is also the season when Ryanair is cutting Charleroi capacity because of the new Belgian tax. So the first thing to do is open the Ryanair fare calendar for CRL ⇄ HEL and see which of Thu 12 / Fri 13 Nov and Sun 15 / Mon 16 Nov are available. I could not confirm the exact days.

Airport to venue

Helsinki-Vantaa → Helsinki Central by commuter train (I/P, ~30 min), then metro towards Kivenlahti (~30 min). One HSL ABC ticket, €4.80, is valid for 90 minutes and covers the whole chain (buy it in the HSL app). Total about 1h15.

Where to sleep, cheapest first

OptionCostNotes
Stay awake at the venue€0Open 24 h, but there are no sleeping areas. Fine for the Saturday night if your team hacks through. Not realistic for two nights. Bring a sleeping mat and earplugs only if you accept sleeping on a floor.
Share a room with teammates~€15–25 per head per nightThe official Junction Discord is where participants find teammates. Splitting a 4-bed room or an apartment with 2–3 people is the cheapest comfortable option.
Forenom Hostel Espoo Otaniemi (4-bed dorm)~$38 average, ~$60 for some datesOtaniemi (Aalto University) is on the same metro line as Kivenlahti, ~20–25 min away. November looks like a pricier month there, so check the real date.
CheapSleep Helsinki (8/18-bed dorm)from ~$47 (~$54 with fees)In Helsinki, not near the venue. ~30–40 min each way by metro. Only worth it if you want a Helsinki base.
Junction partner hotelsDiscounted, price not publishedOffered near the venue in Espoo. Details come with acceptance. Compare against the hostels before booking.

Two nights (Fri + Sat) in a dorm: roughly €70–120. With a shared room, closer to €40–60.

I did not find a confirmed 2026 meal plan, so budget a little extra for food or bring snacks.

Your friend in Madrid

Spain → Finland has one nonstop option, and it is not cheap by Ryanair standards.

RouteDetailsIndicativeVerdict
Madrid → Helsinki nonstopFinnair and Iberia fly it direct, ~4h15. Land in the morning so the doors at 16:00 are easy.Sites list "from ~€118" and an average November return of ~$286.Simple and reliable. Best if the price is near €150–250 return.
Madrid → Helsinki with one stopRyanair/Norwegian-style connections come out cheapest on aggregators (Ryanair shows as cheapest ~two-thirds of the time). Can undercut Finnair, but check the total travel time and bag fees.Take it only if it is clearly cheaper and the layover is under ~4 h.
Meet in Eindhoven or Charleroi firstMadrid → Charleroi/Eindhoven, then fly together on the Ryanair CRL flight.Depends on a cheap Madrid–Belgium fare, which I did not verify.Worth a quick look only if you want to travel together.

Next steps, in order

  1. Confirm you and your friend have applied and are accepted (deadline 25 Oct).
  2. Open the Ryanair CRL ⇄ HEL calendar and note which of Thu 12 / Fri 13 and Sun 15 / Mon 16 Nov fly.
  3. Book flights as soon as you are accepted. Fares for a hackathon weekend only go up.
  4. Book the Eindhoven ⇄ Charleroi bus the same day.
  5. Join the Junction Discord, find a roommate, then book the hostel or partner hotel.
  6. For your friend, compare Finnair/Iberia nonstop against the cheapest one-stop for Fri 13 Nov / Sun 15 Nov.
